How Black Holes Spin Space Time

Why? Because we can use them as futuristic power generators, galactic-scale bombs, and portals to other universes. Hosted by Matt O'Dowd Written by Matt O'Dowd Graphics by Leonardo Scholzer, Yago Ballarini, and Pedro Osinski Directed by: Andrew Kornhaber Executive Producers: Eric Brown and Andrew Kornhaber End Credits Music by J.R.S. Schattenberg: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCRl6-nb4iOnsij-vnpAjp0Q Black holes are self-sustaining holes in the fabric of spacetime. Space at the event horizon cascades downwards, dragging more space behind it, sort of like how water drags itself near the edge of a waterfall. In a Kerr black hole, space above the event horizon is dragged around in a circle - so less waterfall and more whirlpool. Water spiraling down a drain in a flat sink doesn’t know about the hole - it only knows about the motion of the water around it. In fact it’s possible to construct a black hole in general relativity rotating or otherwise - without any mass. Warp spacetime so it looks like the exterior of a black hole, and that warping will persist. So what is rotating? Spacetime is rotating. • Sleepy Facts About the Universe

Can Methane on Mars Be Explained Without Life? - The Scientific Standards for Discovering Extraterrestrial Life | Sleepy Facts About the Universe

Got something to say to this podcast? Send a voicemail, and you might hear yourself on the next episode! The search for life beyond Earth is usually imagined as a single, dramatic moment of discovery, but the actual scientific process is far more demanding and far more interesting. A seasonal plume of methane on Mars or an organic molecule in a meteorite might seem like a clear sign of biology, yet nonliving processes can produce these exact same signatures. Establishing that a signal is real, and then proving it represents life, requires a disciplined chain of reasoning and rigorous testing. This episode examines the methodology scientists use to evaluate potential biosignatures on Mars, in meteorites, and across the solar system. It explores the historical cases of the Viking Labeled Release experiment and the Allan Hills 84001 meteorite, showing how initial excitement gave way to careful scrutiny. The discussion details the essential gates of scientific verification, including reproducibility, environmental context, biological plausibility, and the aggressive testing of abiotic alternatives. I wanted to understand why a single observation is never enough to confirm the existence of extraterrestrial life. While working on this episode, I kept returning to one question: what actually convinces the scientific community that a discovery is genuine? The answer is not a single instrument or a moment of revelation, but the slow accumulation of independent evidence that survives extraordinary scrutiny.

But even the most elegant and complete formulations of quantum physics – like the Dirac equation or Feynman’s path integral - become impossibly complicated when we try to use them on anything but the most simple systems. But physicists tend to interpret “that’s impossible” as “I dare you to try!” And try they did. First they expressed these impossible equations in approximate but solvable forms. Then they tackled the pesky infinities that kept appearing in these new, approximate equations. Finally, the entire mess was ordered into a system that mere humans could deal using the famous Feynman diagrams.
