Episode #176: Your Commitment Partner

In the past we have challenged the idea of accountability in the coaching room; how much can we really hold someone accountable? And we came to the conclusion that we couldn't really do that. And yet, having an accountability partner is still often cited as a reason for having coaching, by both coachees and coaches. As ever, we learn and grow, and refine our thinking, and Tom has been considering this for some while. In this episode we discuss a different idea of what a coach can provide that might look a little like accountability, but is more nuanced and, arguably, more powerful. We also talk about how people are slippery with their own commitments and consider ways to counter this tendency to talk ourselves out of things we really want to do. Tom also makes reference to Gabriele Oettingen, who is not actually a member of a Scandinavian royal family but is in fact part of the German noble house of Oettingen-Spielberg. She is also a psychologist and the creator of the WOOP model for working towards desired outcomes. We hope you enjoy the conversation. Enjoy the podcast? As ever, we learn and grow, and refine our thinking, and Tom has been considering this for some while.

In this episode we discuss a different idea of what a coach can provide that might look a little like accountability, but is more nuanced and, arguably, more powerful.
