On the morning of August 16, 1942, two crewmen set course for a routine anti-submarine patrol. During their patrol, they radioed that they were investigating a suspicious oil slick. Hours later, several witnesses saw the aircraft descending towards them and crashing to the ground. An investigation revealed that the control car was empty and the interior was in perfect order. To this day, the whereabouts of the two crewmen remains a mystery.
