After Hurricane Helene devastated communities across western North Carolina, a group of local residents and volunteers came together to help rebuild what was lost.
The Appalachian Rebuild Project began with emergency relief efforts, delivering supplies, clearing flood-damaged debris, and helping communities that had become difficult to reach. It has since developed into a long-term recovery effort supporting homeowners, churches, businesses, and families across Avery, Mitchell, and Yancey counties.
This story explores the people behind the project, the devastation left by the storm, and the ongoing effort to restore homes, livelihoods, and communities—long after the headlines have disappeared.
