Mary Lou Williams - First Lady of Jazz

Ihr Spiel atmete Jazz-Geschichte: Spirituals, Ragtime, Swing und Bebop, die Pianistin schrieb Messen, arrangierte für Big Bands und experimentierte mit der Avantgarde. Und Mary Lou Williams war eine Wegbereiterin der Gleichberechtigung von Frauen im Jazz. Zwölf Jahre lang war sie Pianistin und Hauptkomponistin von Andy Kirks Twelve Clouds of Joy. Als gefragte Arrangeurin arbeitete Williams u.a. für Benny Goodman, Duke Ellington und Dizzy Gillespie und schrieb drei Messen, gedacht als „Musik für die Seele und den Frieden“. Auch mit dem Free Jazz setzte sie sich – kritisch – auseinander und spielte in der Carnegie Hall ein Duo mit Cecil Taylor. Für ihre musikalischen Verdienste, aber auch für ihre Vorreiter-Rolle für Musikerinnen kürt sie das Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. posthum zur „First Lady of Jazz“ – und ruft eine seit 1996 jährlich stattfindende Veranstaltung ins Leben, auf der ausschließlich Frauen auftreten: das Mary Lou Williams Women in Jazz Festival.
