Lennie Tristano - Der Cool Jazz Pianist

Lennie Tristano war einer der ersten Jazz-Pädagogen. Der blinde Pianist experimentierte mit freier Improvisation und neuen Aufnahme-Techniken. Vor allem aber repräsentierte er die "Tristano-Schule": eine weiße, intellektuelle Variante des Cool Jazz. Tristano wird als Sohn italienischer Einwanderer in Chicago geboren. Mit zehn erblindet, studiert er klassische Musik, beginnt parallel Jazz zu spielen – und zu unterrichten. Für seine selbsternannten „Jünger“ ist Tristano ihr „Meister“. Der spielt nicht nur cool, sondern auch Bebop. 1949 schreibt er Geschichte: „Intuition“, eine freie Improvisation, Vorwegnahme dessen, was Ornette Coleman zehn Jahre später kreieren wird. Seine Experimente sorgen für Aufhorchen und Kontroversen: Als er im Studio Tonspuren übereinanderlegt, den Klang verändert und die Band-Geschwindigkeit variiert, heißt es, er kreiere ein „künstliches Produkt“. Lennie Tristano fühlt sich unverstanden und zieht sich immer mehr zurück. Seine Schule löst er 1956 auf. Lust auf weitere Giant Steps?
