Jelly Roll Morton - Der Erfinder des Jazz?

"Ich war der Schöpfer des Jazz". Bescheidenheit lag dem notorischen Angeber nicht. Doch er zählte zu den Pionieren und Wegbereitern, ein brillanter Geschichtenerzähler, der sich selbst zur Legende erklärte: der Pianist und Komponist Jelly Roll Morton. 1890 in New Orleans geboren, zieht es ihn später nach Chicago, hier gründet Morton Anfang der 20er Jahre die Red Hot Peppers. Seine in New Orleans gewachsenen Beziehungen zur Halb- und Unterwelt pflegt er auch in der „Windy City“. Wenn Morton nicht gerade spielt, verdient er sein Geld als Zuhälter, Schmuggler und Boxpromoter. Sein Auftreten gleicht dem eines Gangsters, stets einen Revolver in der Tasche und mit einem Diamanten im Goldzahn. Als ein Moderator einer Radiosendung W.C. Handy zum „Erfinder des Jazz“ erklärt, schreibt ein gekränkter Jelly einen Brief an das Magazin Downbeat und unterschreibt mit den Worten: „Jelly Roll Morton. Schöpfer des Jazz und der Stomps.
