Recorded at the Vedanta Society of Western Washington on October 16, 2016.
In this talk, Swami Bhaskarananda explores the Vedantic understanding of suffering and the means of attaining lasting peace. He explains the three categories of suffering described in Hindu philosophy: suffering arising from one's own body and mind, suffering caused by other beings, and suffering resulting from forces beyond human control. While many external circumstances cannot be completely avoided, he emphasizes that spiritual disciplines can transform the mind itself, allowing a person to move beyond inner suffering. Drawing on Vedantic teachings, he discusses the nature of God, the relationship between the infinite and the created world, and the importance of purifying the mind in order to experience deeper spiritual awareness.
Swami Bhaskarananda also examines different paths of spiritual practice, including Jnana Yoga, the path of knowledge, and Karma Yoga, the path of selfless action. Through philosophical reflection, scriptural teachings, and stories from Sri Ramakrishna, he illustrates how discrimination, surrender, and performing one's duties without attachment gradually remove the limitations created by ego and selfishness. The lecture concludes by explaining that freedom from suffering does not mean endless worldly enjoyment, but a state of profound peace that arises when the mind becomes purified and recognizes the divine reality underlying all existence.
