Welcome back to the vlog. Today, we are staging an exhaustive, macro-analytical conversation with political theorist and author Benjamin Studebaker to unpack his recent landmark intervention in Isonomia Quarterly: "Trade Wars or Social Wars?"
While modern political commentators treat the rising economic friction between the United States and its Western allies as a series of isolated commercial disputes, Studebaker argues that these tensions are deeply structural. Ever since successive U.S. administrations (from Obama to Trump and Biden) deliberately disabled the World Trade Organization by blocking appointments to its appellate body, the rules-based international order has fragmented into raw bilateral coercion.
Under the second Trump administration, this geopolitical strangulation has accelerated. Allies are being forced to subsidize the U.S. military-industrial base and domestic shale oil industry by purchasing overpriced American weapons and liquefied natural gas (LNG). Paradoxically, European leaders like Emmanuel Macron and Keir Starmer are selling this massive defense buildup to their domestic publics as a triumph of "European autonomy" from a volatile United States. In reality, Studebaker exposes this "Euro-Gaullism" as a complete illusion: it actively Americanizes the European continent by forcing states to gut their social welfare programs to accommodate defense spending, keeping them trapped inside the NATO command structure.
We recontextualize this crisis using an ancient historical framework: The Roman Social War. Unlike a civil war (fought among citizens) or a war of national independence, a social war is fought between a dominant empire and its own allies to reconfigure the legal and standing terms of their integration.
