A Washington Post report cited six Pentagon officials who challenged the casualty total appearing in the public Defense Casualty Analysis System. Five reportedly placed the death toll at no fewer than 22, while a sixth placed it at 23. The public database reportedly listed 18. The explanation may depend on how the Pentagon classifies deaths across the Middle East. Service members killed outside Iran could be excluded from the official Iran war total even when their deaths occurred during ongoing regional hostilities.
