Breaking the script, one Senate race at a time. With Election Day approaching, we look at Seth Bodnar, the Rhodes Scholar, Green Beret and former University of Montana president who is running for U.S. Senate as an independent. No independent has ever won a major statewide office in Montana, but Bodnar has out-raised the rest of the field. We also look at independent campaigns by Kevin Kiley in California and Dan Osborn in Nebraska. We ask what “independent” means once a candidate reaches Washington: do they caucus with a party like Bernie Sanders and Angus King, or make each bill earn their vote? Reporting from Benedict Smith of The Telegraph.
