Miami Auditor Detention Breakdown
transcript
show notes
“Because I wanted to.”
That’s the explanation a Miami police officer gives when asked why he put two men in the back of his patrol car. What began as an exchange over blocking traffic escalated into demands for ID and handcuffs. Was this about enforcing the law, or an officer who couldn’t handle being challenged?
In this episode of Two Cops One Donut, active-duty police sergeant Erik Lavigne breaks down the encounter, questions the officer’s safety explanation, and examines the reported internal affairs findings. He also challenges what the edited footage leaves out, including part of the responding supervisor’s explanation.
The discussion gets into reasonable suspicion, Florida identification requirements, detention versus arrest, and what supervisors should do when someone wants to file a complaint. Erik shares a mistake from his own early career and explains why emotional control and constitutional training matter when an encounter turns confrontational.
You don’t have to like a First Amendment auditor’s approach to take their rights seriously. But where does protected criticism become actual interference, and what should happen when an officer crosses the line?
Listen to the breakdown and decide for yourself. Watch the episode on the Two Cops One Donut YouTube channel to see the footage discussed, and subscribe wherever you listen.
