The British state is now targeting YouTube with a new mandatory "prominence regime", which promotes establishment media, like the BBC, ITV, and Channel 4, over independent creators.
YouTube warns that this plan, called "Watch this space: a new strategic direction for UK media", will mean "Mandatory prioritisation of broadcasters would affect how your content reaches your audience, regardless of what your audience actually wants to see."
If you aren't regulated by the government via Ofcom, your content will be "downranked", treated as less "trustworthy" than legacy broadcasters.
The consultation questionnaire is biased in favour of the regulation. One question about whether the government should censor social media and promote "trusted sources" during "periods of community tension, social unrest and democratic events" (like the Southport stabbings) only allows you to select either "always on" or "only active during periods of heightened vulnerability". There is no Likert scale which allows you to reject the premise of the question and reject the censorship.
The state is determined to crush dissent, and is desperate to ban X. They will ignore our responses to the consultation, but completing it provides political parties, groups like the Free Speech Union, and allies in the US State Department a casus belli to block this insane proposal.
