S2E44: Is Spelling Really “Debunked”? An Advocate Responds | Talk Tracks

After The New York Times published an opinion piece arguing that spelling-based communication has been “debunked,” writer and communication-rights advocate David Kaufer joins Ky Dickens to examine the claims, and the evidence they leave out. David shares how spelling transformed the life of his nonspeaking autistic son, Stone, revealing his intelligence, love of learning, and dreams for the future after years of being denied access to age-appropriate education and meaningful communication. Together, David and Ky unpack the arguments surrounding facilitator influence, the ideomotor effect, and decades-old message-passing studies frequently cited against spelling. They also explore newer eye-tracking research, the role of apraxia and regulation, potential conflicts of interest within autism research, and why nonspeakers are often required to prove authorship in ways speakers are not. Stone then joins the conversation to respond in his own words and share a message of hope with other nonspeakers. This episode asks what is lost when skepticism becomes dismissal, and why access to communication must be treated as a matter of dignity, safety, and fundamental human rights.
