The Menopause and Cancer Podcast

Dani Binnington

Has cancer treatment led you to early menopause? Do you feel confused about your options? This podcast hosts conversations with cancer patients, survivors and medical professionals to learn about treatments available for women with a cancer diagnosis.

I’m Dani Binnington, after breast cancer, surgery to remove my ovaries led me to early menopause, I had no idea what my treatment options were and who in my medical team could help me figure out what to do about my symptoms. I felt alone and unsupported. It took me so long to discover I had lots of options too.

If only I’d known sooner!

Everything I wish I’d known back then is inside these conversations - so you can make the right choices now.

These episodes are a good place to start:

1. Rethinking Tamoxifen & Aromatase Inhibitors
2. Why I decided to take HRT after an oestrogen driven cancer
2. Alcohol & Me

Menopause and cancer is also a thriving community online and in real life.

Episode 229 - I Asked. You Answered. The Next Chapter Begins

After four years of hosting this podcast, I kept thinking about the show's future. I wondered if I should make changes to the format, the episodes, my guests, and I worried if the podcast was still what you guys needed and wanted. Initially, I did a lot of overthinking - but then I knew I just needed to ask YOU. So over the past few weeks, I invited you to share your thoughts about the podcast: what you love, what you'd like more of, and whether you thought anything should change. Your responses made me laugh, made me cry, and reminded me why I pressed record on that very first episode four years ago. In this special solo episode, I'm sharing what you told me, the feedback that surprised me the most, and why your words have shaped the next chapter of this podcast. This isn't about reinventing something that isn't broken. It's about listening, reflecting, and making sure the next person navigating menopause after cancer can find the support they need. In this episode, we talk about: Why I decided to ask for your honest feedback after four years. The survey responses that genuinely surprised me. The conversations you want us to have more of. Why expert interviews and survivor stories aren't going anywhere. The importance of asking the questions that others often avoid. What your feedback taught me about this community. A hint about an exciting announcement coming next week… Episode Timestamps: 00:00 Intro 05:42 Considering podcast changes 12:21 Listener feedback and appreciation 15:57 Planning podcast future direction 19:47 Book price reduction announcement 21:22 Upcoming podcast announcement Links for today’s episode: Substack: If you'd like to stay connected beyond the podcast, you can also find me writing personal reflections over on Still Becoming, where I share the behind-the-scenes of building Menopause and Cancer, life after cancer, motherhood, identity, and everything I'm still learning. Episode 228 - 53 Kilometres, A Sex Toy & Lots of Laughter

This week's episode is a little different. A few weeks ago, a group of us took on a 53km challenge across the Peak District to raise money for Menopause and Cancer. Somewhere between the hills, the aching feet, the snack stops and plenty of laughter, I had this feeling that I wanted to ‘bottle up’ some of the conversations and the energy we had - to bring it to you. So, instead of an expert interview, I thought I'd invite you to come along for the post-walk chat with us. You'll hear honest conversations, a few giggles, reflections on why community matters so much after cancer...and yes, the story of why I ended up feeling rather guilty about keeping hold of one of the prizes that had been donated for our walkers. Let's just say...it involved a rather unexpected gift from our lovely Dr Angela Wright! This episode is a reminder that healing doesn't only happen in clinic rooms. Sometimes it happens when you're walking alongside people who simply understand. Whether you've been listening for four weeks or four years, thank you for being part of this community. And if today's episode leaves you wishing you were there with us, why not join our London Bridges Challenge on 12 September? We'd absolutely love to welcome you. Or perhaps you'll even be tempted by the whispers of an even bigger challenge next year…? You can also take on a challenge anywhere in the world too! Who's in? 😉 And one more thing... This is the final episode before a special two-part series where I'll be sharing the next chapter of the podcast. Don't worry: the conversations you know and love aren't going anywhere, but I can't wait to share what's been quietly unfolding behind the scenes. Episode Highlights: 00:00 Intro 06:37 Reflecting on the race challenge 07:34 Struggling during the race 14:29 Walking challenge with friends 18:52 Completing a charity walkathon 22:30 Discussing resilience and support 27:35 Discussing the “Lemon” 32:22 Building a supportive community 34:10 Community and charity challenges 43:50 Fundraising and community involvement Links & Resources Navigating Menopause After Cancer: my bestselling book bringing together expert advice, lived experience and practical guidance to help you navigate menopause after cancer. https://amzn.eu/d/0fuL8JSs Join the Thames Bridges Trek with the Menopause and Cancer Community – 12th September in London https://menopauseandcancer.org/thames-bridges-trek/ Take on any other fundraising challenge anywhere in the world https://fundraiseformenopauseandcancer.raiselysite.com/fundraisingideas If you’re keen to explore another long-distance hike next year, please email phoebe@menopauseandcancer.org Connect with us: For more information and resources visit our website: www.menopauseandcancer.org Or follow us on Instagram @menopause_and_cancer Join our Facebook group: www.facebook.com/groups/menopauseandcancerchathub Mentioned in this episode: Fundraiser Walk: And walk: https://fundraiseformenopauseandcancer.raiselysite.com/thamesbridgestrekultrachallenge Substack: https://danibinnington.substack.com/

Episode 227 - The Messy Middle: Restarting HRT and Feeling Invisible

Within just a year of being diagnosed with breast cancer, lawyer mum and so-called ‘midlife-hipster’ George made the deeply personal decision to restart HRT. This episode isn't about advocating for or against HRT after breast cancer, and it certainly isn't about telling anyone what they should or shouldn't do. Instead, it's about understanding one woman's journey and exploring the thoughts, emotions and experiences that shaped her decision. This conversation also goes far beyond HRT. George speaks beautifully about something I know many women will recognise: feeling invisible in midlife. Long before she made the decision to restart HRT, she had already begun finding ways to reconnect with herself. We talk about "Sparkly Fridays", bright lipstick, embracing colour, finding moments of joy and slowly rediscovering her confidence. It's a wonderful reminder that getting your mojo back isn't always about one big decision; sometimes it's the many little things that help you feel like yourself again. When I first spoke to George, she was right in the messy middle. She had restarted HRT but, for the first time, found herself feeling anxious about that decision. I know so many people in our community are asking similar questions, often without straightforward answers. My hope is that today's conversation helps us take some of the emotion out of these discussions and instead become a little more curious about one another. We don't all have to make the same decisions, but we can learn so much by listening without judgement. In this episode, we discuss: George's decision to restart HRT after breast cancer Living with uncertainty and navigating deeply personal decisions Anxiety, confidence and trusting yourself Feeling invisible in midlife "Sparkly Fridays" and finding joy in the everyday Why there is no one-size-fits-all approach to menopause after cancer The importance of listening to one another's stories without judgement Episode Timestamps: 00:00 Introduction 04:53 Building an online community 10:58 Early breast cancer diagnosis story 14:10 Discussing HRT decision after cancer 19:19 Anxiety about cancer recurrence 20:34 Discussing menopause and shared decisions 26:10 Discussing hormones and health choices 29:38 Reflecting on past struggles 34:41 Considering future HRT plans 37:40 Heart and bone health after cancer 42:14 Coping with difficult decisions Next week, you'll hear from another breast cancer survivor whose story is completely different. HRT isn't something she would personally consider, and that's exactly why I wanted to share these conversations side by side. Every experience is unique, and by hearing a range of perspectives, my hope is that we can all feel a little more informed, a little more understood, and a little less alone. Enjoy! Episode 226 - Heart Health After Menopause and Cancer: Don't Panic, But Don't Ignore This Either

Heart disease is one of the biggest long-term health concerns facing cancer survivors after menopause. But before you panic, there is a lot more within your control than you might think. Just recently, I’ve seen several social media posts talking about how our risk of heart disease increases during menopause, especially if you’re not taking HRT. I totally understand how, for many cancer survivors, that can feel so frightening. After all, what do you do if HRT isn’t an option, or if the decision is far more complicated because of your cancer history? Or because you’re super young, maybe? That’s exactly why I wanted to bring in Dr Jordan Emont. Dr Emont is a board-certified OB-GYN with advanced training in menopause medicine, integrative hormonal care and sexual health. In this episode, we talk about what menopause really means for our heart and metabolic health, why cholesterol and insulin resistance matter, and most importantly, the practical steps we can take to reduce risk and feel more in control of our future health. This is a reassuring, empowering conversation that moves beyond fear and focuses on what we can actually do. Whether you’re on endocrine therapy, navigating treatment-induced menopause, or simply wondering how to protect your long-term health after cancer, I think you’ll find this episode incredibly helpful. Resources: Find Dr Emont here https://www.drjordanemont.com/ I have also recorded an in-depth episode on ‘How to take control of your cholesterol’. Go check it out! Episode 225 - Supplements And Cancer: Are We Missing Out?

Whether it's joint pain, fatigue, brain fog, poor sleep, hot flushes or anxiety, it can feel frustrating when symptoms linger long after treatment ends. For many people, supplements seem like a logical place to look for menopause support, but with endless products, conflicting advice and cupboards full of half-used bottles, how do you know what's actually worth taking? In this episode, I am once again joined by leading oncologist, researcher and integrative medicine specialist Professor Robert Thomas to explore the role supplements may play in supporting health and wellbeing after cancer. Make sure to have pen and paper ready, as I think you’ll need it! In this episode, we discuss: Why so many cancer survivors turn to supplements How to identify what symptoms you're actually trying to support Which supplements have anti-cancer properties? Which supplements help with joint pain? Supplements that may help with sleep The role of vitamin D, probiotics and omega-3 What should I NOT have too much of? The debate around multivitamins after cancer Common supplement mistakes that waste money Creatine: what we know and what we still don't know for cancer survivors One of the most powerful messages from this conversation is that there is rarely one magic supplement. Instead, the best results often come from understanding your symptoms, focusing on overall health and making informed decisions based on evidence rather than marketing. Episode Highlights: 00:00 Introduction 05:06 Discussing supplements with oncologists 08:34 Discussing supplement safety and benefits 11:13 Improving gut health in menopause 16:03 Concerns about multivitamins and antioxidants 17:52 Discussing supplements and deficiencies 20:57 Understanding Mineral Intake from Food 25:44 Discussing creatine vs collagen benefits Resources Keep Healthy: keep-healthy.com and https://keep-healthy.com/polyphenols/ Rob’s bestselling book "How to Live" About Dr Robert Thomas Dr Robert Thomas is a Consultant Oncologist, Professor of Nutritional and Sports Science, researcher, author and Head of Integrative Oncology at UCLH. His work focuses on helping people combine conventional cancer treatments with evidence-based lifestyle strategies to improve outcomes and quality of life. He also leads a research unit that has designed landmark scientific studies which provide the evidence that guide nutritionists, support groups, doctors and patients across the World. As well as mainstream oncology studies, the team focuses on randomised trials that evaluate the impact of exercise, diet, gut health and natural therapies on cancer, long covid and exercise performance, menopause and cancer. This included 5 RCT's addressing hormone related symptons after breast cancer including patient choice as a primary end point. His latest two double blind RCTs, discovered that boosting dietary phytochemicals (with Yourphyto) and gut health (with Yourgutplus) slowed prostate cancer progression, improved erectile function and urinary symptoms and improved three key biomarkers of longevity. Episode 224 - Turmeric After Cancer: Have We Got It Wrong? With Professor Robert Thomas

Can turmeric really help with joint pain, inflammation and gut health after cancer? And why are so many people being told to avoid it? In this fascinating conversation, I sit down with leading oncologist, researcher and integrative medicine expert Professor Robert Thomas to unpack the science behind turmeric, gut health and cancer recovery. Prof Thomas shares why he believes many patients are receiving outdated advice about turmeric, explains where concerns about tamoxifen interactions originated, and explores what the latest research actually tells us. Together, we discuss the role of gut health in long-term wellbeing, why exercise remains one of the most powerful tools available after cancer, and how lifestyle medicine can work alongside conventional cancer treatments. In this episode, we discuss: The surprising evidence behind turmeric and cancer Why turmeric became controversial in breast cancer care The difference between turmeric, curcumin and supplements Gut health, inflammation and the microbiome Managing joint pain and menopausal symptoms after cancer Exercise as a tool to improve cancer outcomes How integrative oncology combines medical treatment with lifestyle strategies Common myths surrounding supplements and cancer Resources Keep Healthy: keep-healthy.com and https://keep-healthy.com/polyphenols/ Rob’s bestselling book "How to Live" Episode Highlights: 00:00 Introduction 09:33 Discussing hormone therapy options 12:30 Discussing health and patient advocacy 15:00 Discussing menopause treatments 20:06 Turmeric's rise in health circles 22:24 Antioxidant and anti-inflammatory benefits 24:21 Curcumin study and dosage discussion 28:01 Addressing turmeric's cancer misconceptions 32:28 Simplifying Supplement Choices About Prof Robert Thomas: Thomas is a Consultant Oncologist, Professor of Nutritional and Sports Science, author, researcher and Head of Integrative Oncology at UCLH. Episode 223 - Four Years, Hundreds of Conversations and One Big Question: What's Next?

Four years ago, I sat down and recorded the very first episode of The Menopause and Cancer Podcast. At the time, I had no idea what I was doing. I didn't know whether anyone would listen, whether I'd make it past a handful of episodes, or that four years later I'd still be here, talking to you every single week. What began as a simple idea, to create the menopause resource I desperately wished I'd had after cancer, has grown into something far bigger than I ever imagined. Over the last four years, we've shared hundreds of conversations with incredible experts, survivors, partners, advocates and healthcare professionals. Together we've explored symptoms, treatments, relationships, intimacy, identity, mental health, grief, hope and everything in between. The podcast has opened doors I never expected. It has led to friendships, opportunities, a bestselling book, healthcare professional training, events, retreats and the growth of Menopause and Cancer into a global movement. But perhaps the greatest gift has been you: your emails, messages and stories. Hosting this podcast has been one of the greatest privileges of my life. And the truth is, I think the podcast has changed me just as much as it has helped others. Over the last four years, life has changed, too. My daughters have grown up. I've become a founder, an author and somehow a CEO. I've gained confidence in some areas and lost it in others. I've learned new skills, made mistakes, changed my mind, needed reading glasses and realised that growth rarely happens in a straight line. Recently, I've been reflecting a lot on identity. For years, I was a yoga teacher. Then an advocate. Then a founder. Now a CEO. And yet, if I'm honest, I don't always feel like any of those labels fully fit anymore. Maybe you've felt that too? Are we constantly in transition? Perhaps that's why this moment feels important. Not because we've reached four years, but because it feels like the beginning of a new chapter. I've recently started a new project called Still Becoming: a kind of blog, and in many ways, this is how it all started for me. It's a space where I can share some of the conversations that don't always fit neatly into a Menopause and Cancer podcast episode: reflections on identity, motherhood, relationships, intimacy, purpose, building a charity and navigating all the messy, beautiful parts of being human. And because this next chapter isn't just about me, I'd love your help. I've created a short listener survey to help shape the future of the podcast. What have you loved? What has helped? What conversations are missing? What would you like more of? I'll also be inviting a small group of listeners to join me on a Zoom call on 9th July at 5pm so we can talk about the future together. For now, though, I simply want to say thank you. Thank you for listening. Thank you for showing up. Thank you for sharing your stories. Thank you for trusting me with them. Episode 222 - “We Had To Learn Too” Cancer Care Nurses on Menopause After Cancer

In this inspiring episode, Dani is joined by two breast care clinical nurse specialists from Milton Keynes University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust to explore what’s possible when healthcare professionals truly listen, learn and work together to improve menopause care for women after cancer treatment. If you’re a patient, this is a must-listen so that you can set realistic expectations of what’s possible. If you’re a healthcare professional, you’ll be blown away by what Jaqcui and her team have achieved through hard work and persistence. Clinical Nurse Specialist Jacqui shares how she helped shape and evolve the support offered within her team around menopause after cancer, bringing colleagues together, opening up important conversations, and helping create more compassionate, informed care for patients navigating life after treatment. She is joined by her colleague, Christina for an honest discussion about what they’ve learned from patients over the years, the gaps they began to recognise, and the practical changes that can happen even within stretched NHS services and limited resources. Dani says, “Thank you for being utterly amazing!” Jaqcui and Christina mention Dani’s book and say how helpful it is for them. Episode 221 - Who controls what happens between women’s legs after menopause

Who controls what happens between women’s legs after menopause? It’s a confronting question, but one that sits at the heart of this episode. In this short, powerful conversation, I am joined by menopause specialist and sexologist Dr Angela Wright to explore why so many women — particularly those who have had cancer — are still being denied access to vaginal and vulval oestrogen treatments. And why we’re not routinely having the conversation about sexual health after cancer treatment. Despite being widely recognised as one of the most effective and low-risk treatments for genitourinary symptoms of menopause (GSM), access remains incredibly low. Many women are left navigating pain, dryness, recurrent infections, loss of sexual function, and a deep impact on identity and relationships — often without being offered treatment. Or they’re told ‘no’. This episode explores: Why are women not allowed to make an informed choice about their intimate health? The realities of genitourinary syndrome of menopause (GSM) — and why it’s more than “just dryness” The added complexity for women on treatments like aromatase inhibitors (e.g. Letrozole) The emotional and relational impact of untreated symptoms How history, culture, and medical caution continue to shape women’s access to care The growing body of guidance suggesting low-dose vaginal hormones may be appropriate for many women, including after breast cancer The balance between clinical responsibility and patient autonomy This is not a black-and-white conversation. It’s not about right or wrong. It’s an invitation — to think, to question, and to open up more honest, informed conversations between patients and healthcare professionals. Because at its core, is it about choice? Episode 220 - What are my rights? Working with cancer and menopause

Do you know your rights to work after a cancer diagnosis and with ongoing menopause symptoms? From navigating time off, to returning to work, to managing menopause symptoms in the workplace, it can feel overwhelming to know what your rights are and what support you should expect. I’m joined by Barbara Wilson, from Working With Cancer, who brings over 50 years of experience supporting people through cancer at work. Together, we break this down in a really practical way— so you can feel more informed and more confident in advocating for yourself. In this episode, we cover: Whether cancer is automatically considered a disability under UK law Your rights when returning to work after treatment What a good return-to-work plan should actually look like What “reasonable adjustments” mean — and real-life examples What counts as discrimination in this context How much do you need to disclose about your diagnosis (including when applying for a job) Whether menopause is recognised as a disability under UK law How treatment-induced menopause after cancer is considered in the workplace Whether employers are expected to support menopause symptoms Episode Highlights: 00:00 Introduction 06:31 Supporting employees with cancer 08:07 Discussing cancer diagnoses and menopause 13:38 Creating flexible workplace plans 15:29 Discussing cancer disclosure at work 20:23 Discussing return to work planning 22:00 Discussing phased return to work 28:48 Supporting employees with health challenges 31:22 Menopause and post-cancer life changes 37:16 Flexible work schedule adjustments 43:07 Reevaluating work after cancer diagnosis 44:39 Easing back into work 47:52 Disclosing cancer to an employer Link to Working with Cancer: https://workingwithcancer.co.uk/ Connect with us: For more information and resources visit our website: www.menopauseandcancer.org Or follow us on Instagram @menopause_and_cancer Join our Facebook group: www.facebook.com/groups/menopauseandcancerchathub Mentioned in this episode: Substack: https://danibinnington.substack.com/

Episode 219 - Who Am I Now: Identity After Menopause and Cancer

In this very special community conversation, I sit down with a group of incredible women from our Menopause and Cancer community to explore something so many of us struggle with after cancer treatment… identity. I’m so grateful the group allowed me to get this conversation out to you! Lucky us. Who are we now? Together, we talk openly about the physical and emotional changes that can leave us feeling disconnected from ourselves — from body image and confidence, to work, relationships, grief, loss, purpose and rebuilding. Rather than bringing in an expert, I thought it might be best to just have an honest conversation, share experiences and learn from one another. Because the wisdom in our community is WONDERFUL! What became clear throughout this discussion is that so many of us are living in what I call “the messy middle” — no longer who we were before cancer, but not yet fully arrived in who we are becoming. If you’ve ever felt lost, changed, disconnected or uncertain about your place in the world after treatment, this episode is for you. Episode 218 - What Is It Like for Partners? Men Supporting Women Through Cancer & Menopause

In this episode, I’m joined by Rob and Andy, two partners navigating life alongside their wives through cancer and menopause. I actually asked in our Facebook community if anyone’s partners would be willing to come on the podcast… and these two were put forward by their wives — earning themselves serious brownie points in the process. This is a really honest conversation about what it feels like to be on the other side. We talk about the overwhelm, the uncertainty, and that feeling of wanting to help but not always knowing how. From the emotional impact to the mood changes, this episode sheds light on a perspective we don’t hear enough about. Because supporting someone through cancer and menopause doesn’t come with a manual — and partners need support and understanding too. And yes - I did bring up intimacy and low libido - and they did not just quit the call! I am so grateful to Rob and Andy! Thank you so much! If this resonates, do share this episode with your partner — so we can include them in this conversation too. This one is for you… and for them. Episode Highlights: 00:00 Introduction 04:13 Discovering and diagnosing cancer 14:49 Discussing menopause challenges and support 18:50 Discussing impacts of menopause 21:49 Challenges in managing menopause symptoms 22:55 Dealing with post-cancer anxiety 30:41 Discussing intimacy post-cancer 34:43 Importance of communication in relationships 37:46 Discussing menopause and HRT advice 42:05 Discussing medically induced menopause Connect with us: For more information and resources visit our website: www.menopauseandcancer.org Or follow us on Instagram @menopause_and_cancer Join our Facebook group: www.facebook.com/groups/menopauseandcancerchathub Mentioned in this episode: Substack: https://danibinnington.substack.com/

Episode 217 - Support, Strength & Saying It As It Is - Living with Secondary Cancer

In this episode, I’m joined by the incredible Lisa, founder of Make 2nds Count and The House of Hope charity in Edinburgh, who is living with secondary breast cancer while continuing to support so many others. This is an honest, heartfelt conversation about what it really means to live with ongoing cancer treatment. I ask Lisa if she feels excluded from other menopause conversations and even from the many cancer chats out there. We talk about saying it as it is, the emotional reality of menopause and secondary cancer, and the strategies that help day-to-day, alongside the strength, purpose and perspective that can still exist within it all. Lisa’s work has been a shining light for me personally, especially when I was building Menopause and Cancer and recording this episode while one of our community support sessions was taking place at The House of Hope felt like a real full-circle moment. We also share more about our upcoming Menopause Awareness Day event on the 18th June, which we’ll be marking at The House of Hope. Episode 216 - Is It Brain Fog… or ADHD?

In this episode, I’m joined by GP and menopause specialist Dr Helen Wall, and we’re exploring something that so many of you have been talking about in our community — struggling with brain fog, focus, memory, total overwhelm, and that feeling of just not feeling like you can manage anymore. We often call it brain fog. But what if, for some of us, it could be something more? Today, we’re diving into ADHD in women, and how it can show up — or become more noticeable — during menopause and after, especially cancer treatment. Because the reality is, many women are only being diagnosed later in life. And for those of us navigating sudden menopause, hormonal changes, and the impact of cancer treatment, it can feel even more confusing to understand what’s really going on in our brains. This episode is here to help you make sense of it all. We also talk about: How do I know what’s what? Does lifestyle help my ADHD brain? Can you take ADHD medication after cancer? And so much more. Episode Highlights: 00:00 Intro 06:55 Discussing menopause and mental load 10:04 Navigating neurodivergence and perimenopause 16:24 ADHD, oestrogen, and perimenopause link 17:58 The impact of menopause on brain function 22:38 Lack of education on female hormones 25:43 Understanding ADHD in women and girls 28:07 Challenges with post-cancer employment and support 34:08 ADHD medication challenges and support 39:24 ADHD and diet considerations 44:45 Navigating ADHD and menopause You can find Helen’s book here: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Menopause-ADHD-neurodivergence-Vermilion-Empowered/dp/178504642X And this is Helen’s Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/doctorhelenwall/ Connect with us: For more information and resources visit our website: www.menopauseandcancer.org Or follow us on Instagram @menopause_and_cancer Join our Facebook group: www.facebook.com/groups/menopauseandcancerchathub Mentioned in this episode: Substack: https://danibinnington.substack.com/

Episode 215 - Bone Health After Cancer & Menopause: What Every Survivor Needs to Know

In this episode, I’m joined by Lindsey Lester, a British Menopause Society-accredited specialist and breast cancer survivor, for an essential conversation on bone health after cancer and menopause. Bone health is one of the most common — and least talked about — long-term effects of cancer treatment. Whether your menopause was triggered suddenly by treatment or has developed over time, the impact on your bones can be significant. We explore how treatments such as chemotherapy, endocrine therapies (including tamoxifen and aromatase inhibitors), steroids, and treatment-induced menopause can all affect bone density — across different types of cancer, not just breast cancer. We also talk about who may be most at risk, how quickly bone density can change, and why bone loss is often called a “silent” condition — with many people not realising until much later. A key part of this conversation is understanding DEXA scans — when to have one, how often to monitor your bone health, and what it really means if you’re told you have osteopenia or osteoporosis. But most importantly, this episode is about what you can do. From nutrition and movement to medications and monitoring, Lindsey shares clear, practical ways to protect your bones — and answers one of the biggest questions so many people have after cancer: Can we improve our bone health without HRT? This episode will help you feel more informed, more in control, and better equipped to make decisions about your long-term health. Episode Highlights: 00:00 Intro 06:09 Participant introductions and background questions 09:00 Discussing osteoporosis awareness plan 13:03 Postmenopausal bone health risks 15:16 Discussing bone health awareness 20:08 Young people unaware of health risks 22:49 Discussing tamoxifen and ovarian function 28:51 Experiencing medical and surgical menopause 31:37 Calcium and vitamin D for bone health 39:52 Tracking calcium on a vegan diet 44:54 Discussing exercise for bone health 49:30 Cholesterol management with exercise 51:47 Benefits of building muscle Here are some links we mentioned: https://theros.org.uk/information-and-support/bone-health/nutrition-for-bones/calcium/calcium-rich-food-chooser/ https://strwebstgmedia.blob.core.windows.net/media/0lhowmrk/about-exercise-fact-sheet-february-2019.pdf You can find Lindsey here: https://healthinmenopause.co.uk/meet-the-team/ Connect with us: For more information and resources visit our website: www.menopauseandcancer.org Or follow us on Instagram @menopause_and_cancer Join our Facebook group: www.facebook.com/groups/menopauseandcancerchathub Mentioned in this episode: Substack: https://danibinnington.substack.com/

Episode 214 - What It Really Feels Like & And Your Questions Answered

In this episode, I’m doing something a little different. I’m sharing real stories of who I met, what went on in our menopause after cancer community, and real experiences of what menopause after cancer actually feels like. The parts that often go unspoken. I mull over if menopause after cancer needs a rebrand? What does it mean to set realistic expectations? And alongside that, I’m answering your questions. From hair to how long does menopause last to GLP-1’s and risk — this is a space to bring it all together. Because so often, we’re told what should happen… but not what it really feels like to live through it. And because sometimes the best meaning advice is hard to implement for yourself - right at the end, I’m reading a beautiful poem to you by Jeff Foster - it’s called: Slow Down Friend. You’re not alone in this. And there are ways to feel better. Episode Highlights: 00:00 Intro 05:42 Discussing menopause after cancer support 17:40 Answering listener questions on hair thinning 20:54 Diagnosing and treating hair loss 23:04 Discussing hair fibres and re-growth helmets 25:55 Discussing menopause after ovary removal 29:33 Managing cancer treatment and lifestyle risks 32:11 Considering whole patient health 35:26 Finding solace in the poem, Slow Down Friend Episode mentions: Episode 118: https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/ep-118-what-is-the-evidence-between-hrt-and-breast/id1631842514?i=1000666722248 Episode 191: https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/episode-191-i-cant-shift-the-weight-should-i-consider/id1631842514?i=1000736358058 Connect with us: For more information and resources visit our website: www.menopauseandcancer.org Or follow us on Instagram @menopause_and_cancer Join our Facebook group: www.facebook.com/groups/menopauseandcancerchathub Mentioned in this episode: Substack: https://danibinnington.substack.com/

Episode 212 - Questioning Alcohol After Cancer in Menopause

In this honest and judgment-free conversation, Dani is joined by cancer survivors Emily and Anita to explore their relationship with alcohol after cancer and during menopause. Together, they talk openly about questioning drinking habits, attempts to moderate or stop altogether, the social shifts that come with drinking less, and the impact on identity and relationships. We know that no amount of alcohol is completely safe. Large studies show that alcohol increases the risk of at least seven different cancers, and it can also worsen menopause symptoms such as hot flushes, poor sleep, and anxiety. But this episode isn’t about shame or blame. It’s an invitation to reflect — gently and without judgement — on your own relationship with alcohol. Whether you drink occasionally, regularly, or not at all, this conversation creates space to pause and ask: Is this still serving me? Episode Highlights: 00:00 Intro 06:41 "Finding My People Alcohol-Free" 13:20 "Alcohol-Free Holiday Journey" 16:37 "Redefining Roles When Sober" 24:34 "Sober Struggle with Moderation" 26:37 "Authentic Connections Without Alcohol" 30:26 Alcohol, Endometriosis, and Regret 32:03 Alcohol, Cancer, and Self-Blame 35:14 "Individual Choices in Health" 41:06 "Sober Journey, New Experiences" These are the websites Anita and Emily mention: https://besober.co.uk/ and https://soberbutterfly.com/ You can find Anita here https://yogaandsoundwithanita.co.uk/ And Emily here https://www.linkedin.com/in/emily-lunn-4931b3106/ Connect with us: For more information and resources visit our website: www.menopauseandcancer.org Or follow us on Instagram @menopause_and_cancer Join our Facebook group: www.facebook.com/groups/menopauseandcancerchathub Mentioned in this episode: Substack: https://danibinnington.substack.com/

Episode 211- The PIONEER Trial: Rethinking Hormones After Breast Cancer?

In this episode of The Menopause and Cancer Podcast, I’m joined by Dr Susanna Unsworth, GP and menopause specialist at the Cambridge breast unit, to talk about why menopause after cancer can sometimes feel like such a complex and at times controversial area of medicine. We explore why medical opinions can differ, why this space is not always black and white, and what happens when new research starts to challenge long-held assumptions. A big focus of this conversation is the PIONEER trial, a Cambridge-led study looking at whether megestrol acetate — a drug that acts on the progesterone receptor — could be used alongside standard anti-oestrogen treatment in oestrogen receptor-positive breast cancer and how it may also help with hot flushes! It’s a bit mind-blowing when you think that all we hear all the time is NO to any HORMONES after breast cancer! So we talk about why that finding has caught so much attention. We also talk about the very real emotional burden of endocrine therapy, the impact on quality of life, and why so many patients feel stuck between wanting to reduce recurrence risk and wanting to feel more like themselves again. Susanna also shares how the Cambridge breast unit is developing its menopause service, including group education sessions to help prepare patients earlier and improve access to support. This is a really thoughtful conversation about evidence, uncertainty, quality of life, and why people affected by cancer deserve honest, nuanced menopause care. Episode Highlights: 00:00 Introduction 04:49 "World Menopause & Cancer Day" 06:21 GP Turned Women's Health Specialist 09:44 "Menopause, Breast Cancer, and Controversies" 13:29 Progesterone Trial Slows Cancer Growth 17:13 Hormonal Interplay and Cancer Risk 22:40 "Balancing Treatment Choices Carefully" 26:46 "Menopause, Social Media, and HRT" 32:05 Creating seminars to deliver information to more women About my guest Dr Susanna Unsworth is a GP and menopause specialist working within the breast unit in Cambridge, supporting patients experiencing menopause symptoms after breast cancer treatment. Episode 210 - Can Acupuncture Help Menopause Symptoms After Cancer? Looking at the Research

Today, we’re exploring the evidence with medical acupuncturist Maria Vega. Many cancer survivors experience menopause symptoms such as hot flushes, joint pain, insomnia and anxiety — often while navigating complex treatment plans or endocrine therapy.
