Today, On The Live Tap Podcast, I sit down with Howard University Volleyball setter Alexys James to dive deep into her journey from growing up in the Houston, Texas area to becoming one of the rising players in HBCU volleyball.
Alexys takes us back to her early days playing volleyball and shares what it was like growing up as an African American setter, the challenges and experiences that helped shape her into the player she is today, and the lessons she learned throughout her development. We talk about the importance of finding confidence in your position, handling adversity, and continuing to believe in yourself while competing at a high level.
Alexys also reflects on her historic freshman season at Howard, where she made an immediate impact and earned MEAC All-Rookie Team and All-Second Team honors. She discusses what that first season taught her, the transition to playing Division I volleyball, and what it meant to see her hard work recognized while representing Howard University.
But this season, Alexys and the Bison have bigger goals.
We talk about the mindset inside the Howard locker room and how the team is determined to erase the narrative of simply making the tournament. With championship aspirations, Alexys explains what she and her teammates are doing to raise the standard, compete with confidence, and ultimately bring a MEAC championship back to Howard.
From her journey in Houston, to her development as a setter, to making history as a freshman and now chasing a championship with Howard, this episode gives you an inside look at the mindset, experiences, and motivation behind one of HBCU volleyball's rising stars.
