Numbers 3-4

Numbers 3-4 It has been 13 months since the Exodus and Israel has been camped at the base of Mt Sinai for most of that time. There they have entered into a covenant with Yahweh to be his people. They will be a kingdom of priests and a holy nation on God's behalf. They’ve received the Law which teaches them God’s ways for their time and they have built the tabernacle and launched tabernacle worship. Now it’s time to pack up and move out, heading to the land God had promised to Abraham and to them as his descendants. So in Numbers 1-2 God instructs Moses to count and arrange the people into military divisions. Now here, in Numbers 3-4, the instructions are directed to the priests and the Levites, preparing them for their responsibilities as they move out. They weren’t counted before because they aren’t going to serve as part of the military but they have other important responsibilities pertaining to caring for and transporting the tabernacle. Numbers 3-4

It has been 13 months since the Exodus and Israel has been camped at the base of Mt Sinai for most of that time.
