At least with Starmer you knew what you were getting. He couldn't communicate, couldn't connect with ordinary people and, in my view, you could see the political spin coming a mile off. Burnham is different. He is a brilliant communicator. He understands PR. He talks the language of ordinary people. But where are the RESULTS? That's what tonight's show is about. Take the disgraceful situation surrounding PC Andrew Harper's killers. After massive public anger, Burnham now says he is "increasingly confident" they can be prevented from being released early. Good. I hope he succeeds. BUT WHY DID WE GET INTO THIS POSITION IN THE FIRST PLACE? Why weren't killers like these excluded from the early-release scheme from day one? Why has it taken outrage from the Harper family, the police and hundreds of thousands of ordinary people to force action? And then there are the SMALL BOATS. Burnham promised to be "relentless". But people are still crossing the Channel. Since he entered Downing Street, thousands more have made the journey. 3000 in total! We don't need another slogan. WE NEED RESULTS. Then there's Burnham's growing shopping list of promises: £2 bus fares, help for pubs, social-care reform, apprenticeships, energy measures and more. Some of those ideas sound great. I've said that myself. But Britain's finances don't run on good intentions. WHERE IS THE MONEY COMING FROM? Burnham's first Budget isn't until October, so tonight I want to separate the announcements from the properly costed policies and ask whether we're being sold another enormous helping of JAM TOMORROW. That's my growing concern about Andy Burnham. LOTS OF PR. LOTS OF ANNOUNCEMENTS. LOTS OF PROMISES. But will he actually deliver?
