The war turns. The Greeks retreat to their ships, broken and afraid, and Agamemnon weeps. Book 9 gives us the great embassy, three heroes sent to Achilles' tent to beg his return, bearing gifts and promises and the hollow pride of a king who knows he was wrong. And Achilles, still burning, still grieving, says no. It is the most human moment in all of Homer, a man choosing his wrath over glory, knowing glory will kill him, and refusing to care. For the first time, a hero tells the gods' story on his own terms.
