In this Deepcast episode, Gary Zukav introduces courage, the second category of the Authentic Power Guidelines created by his spiritual partner, Linda Francis. Having covered the Commitment Guidelines, Gary explains why courage comes next. Authentic power is love, and before you can love, you have to know intimately the parts of your personality that can’t. Gary draws on his years as an Army paratrooper to compare two kinds of courage. The old kind chases admiration and external power. The new kind turns inward.
Frightened parts of the personality, such as jealousy, anger, resentment, competitiveness, superiority, and inferiority, see you and the world in very limited ways. They hurt physically. They keep you up at night. When you act on them without awareness, they create painful consequences every time. Most people who decide to create authentic power meet fear first, because fear is what they have been living in without knowing it.
Gary’s guidance is to use your courage to look at yourself with your eyes open. Become fully aware of each frightened part so you can move beyond its control, and cultivate the loving parts of your personality that are grateful, caring, and in awe of the Universe.
What You’ll Discover in This Episode:
(02:41) – As a personality aligns with its soul, its energy flows into the Earth school like breath through a flute. Commitment is the dive into the pool.
(05:06) – Courage as the second category of Authentic Power Guidelines, and why you can’t love until you know your personality’s frightened parts.
(08:17) – Old courage versus new. Gary’s paratrooper pride in the Vietnam War sought admiration and external power. New courage explores yourself completely.
(11:01) – Courage stretches you past the limited view of your personality’s frightened parts, and acting on anger or jealousy never brings joy.
(15:47) – Challenge a frightened part by becoming fully aware of it and moving beyond its control, without fighting or giving in. Loving parts need no courage.
(18:15) – Fear comes first when you create authentic power. Chasing external power now brings only violence and destruction.
Embrace the Soul Step Challenge
This week, write in your soul notebook each time you did something you were frightened to do. Pause and ask: Why did I do that? Was I trying to feel better, impress someone, or win admiration? Or was I loving without an agenda? Answer with integrity. At week’s end, read what you wrote. Notice when you used your courage to pursue external power and when you used it to love.
