Jonah claimed to fear God verbally, yet he actually ran away from God’s command to go to Nineveh. His flight was not driven by physical terror of a storm or the journey, but rather by his anger and dread that God would show mercy to his enemies
Jonah did not fear physical danger or failure. Instead, he feared that Nineveh would repent and that God would forgive a ruthless enemy nation he wanted to see destroyed.
Pride and Prejudice: He despised the Assyrians of Nineveh and felt bitter that God’s compassion extended outside of Israel.
