In today’s episode of The BCC Podcast, Kevin Carson, Executive Director of the Biblical Counseling Coalition, is joined by Kyle Gangel, lead pastor of Southern Hills Bible Church in Custer, South Dakota. Kyle serves as both a pastor and biblical counselor and joins Kevin to consider five characteristics of a local church where biblical counseling can naturally grow and flourish. In this conversation, Kevin and Kyle discuss what it looks like to cultivate a church culture that is Christ-centered, pastorally led, committed to one-another ministry, committed to meaningful church membership, and dependent upon Christ for genuine spiritual change. Rather than focusing on developing a formal counseling program or center, they consider how biblical counseling grows out of the ordinary life and ministry of a healthy local church, where pastors model and equip God’s people to faithfully minister His Word to one another. Kevin and Kyle also address what pastors and church members can do when their church does not yet reflect these characteristics. Pastors can begin by examining their own ministry, faithfully preaching God’s Word, modeling one-another ministry, and equipping God’s people for the work of ministry. Church members can begin right where God has placed them—loving, encouraging, serving, and faithfully ministering the Word to those around them.
