What is the EU AI Act?

This episode of Techsplainers explores the EU AI Act, the European Union’s landmark law for regulating artificial intelligence through a risk-based framework. The episode explains who the act applies to across the AI value chain, including providers, deployers and importers, and why its reach can extend beyond Europe when AI outputs are used inside the EU. It breaks down the law’s core structure, covering prohibited AI practices, high-risk systems and the transparency obligations that apply to other types of AI use. The discussion also examines what compliance looks like in practice. Listeners learn about requirements for high-risk AI systems such as lifecycle risk management, data governance, technical documentation, conformity assessments and post-market monitoring. The episode also covers the separate rules for general-purpose AI models, including added obligations for models considered to pose systemic risk. Finally, it connects the act to digital sovereignty, showing how AI governance, auditability and regulatory alignment are becoming part of broader business resilience strategies. Along the way, it also outlines the law’s penalties and phased implementation timeline.
