What is digital sovereignty?

This episode of Techsplainers explores digital sovereignty and why it has become a growing priority for organizations navigating geopolitical pressure, cyber risk, regulation and the rapid expansion of AI. The episode explains digital sovereignty as the ability to retain control over technology systems, data, operations and artificial intelligence—and to prove that control when needed. It breaks the concept into four main components: operational sovereignty, data sovereignty, technology sovereignty and AI sovereignty, showing how each contributes to resilience, compliance and strategic flexibility. Flexibility. The discussion also examines what digital sovereignty means in practice for CIOs, CISOs, compliance teams, procurement leaders and risk professionals. It highlights why sectors such as financial services, healthcare, telecommunications and the public sector face especially strong pressure to prioritize sovereignty. Finally, the episode looks at how sovereignty solutions are evolving beyond simple data residency to include operational control, portability, open standards, automated compliance monitoring and stronger governance over AI systems. Along the way, it shows why digital sovereignty is becoming less of a policy slogan and more of a practical framework for managing modern digital dependence.
