The 1895 Washington D.C. Ghost Panic

In the autumn of 1895, a bizarre ghost craze gripped Washington, D.C., when Officer Sedgwick, an African American patrolman, reported a tall, headless figure in white drifting through the dimly lit streets of Northeast Washington. After shooting at the apparition with no effect, Sedgwick had custom silver bullets cast for his revolver, while fellow officers and frightened locals reported identical sightings that drew midnight crowds of ghost hunters. In this episode of Southern Ghost Stories, Allen Sircy tracks "Sedgwick's Ghost," exploring the panic, silver bullets, and one of the strangest phantom hunts in the nation's capital.
