More Hell in the Woods

Following the brutal 1896 murder of Aaron Beck, the Appalachian mining town of Helenwood, Tennessee, descended into an era of relentless bloodshed that earned it the grim moniker "Hell in the Woods." In 1897 alone, forty-seven people were shot in the streets as drunken shootouts, labor disputes, and even a local judge murdering a teenager turned the settlement into a mountain powder keg. The town's dark lore took an even stranger turn in 1921 when miner Cruise Sexton hauled a 500-pound, horned "petrified devil" from a nearby cavern, drawing nationwide spectacle shortly before a catastrophic dynamite explosion leveled nearly fifty buildings. In this episode of Southern Ghost Stories, Allen Sircy concludes the bloody saga of Scott County, exploring a vicious frontier crime wave, an apocalyptic blast, and the bizarre legend of the stone demon beneath the mountains.
