The Denier

THE DENIER You say the rain is falling upward, you say the fire isn’t warm. You watch the window slowly breaking, then swear there never was a storm. You change the names, you move the signs, you leave the truth three steps behind. Close your eyes and call it daylight, turn the evidence around. Keep on talking through the silence till you cannot hear the sound. You saw the smoke across the ceiling, you smelled the ashes on your coat. But every time the room gets darker you find another little note. Not this. Not now. Not me. Not how. No. No. No. No… Close your eyes and call it daylight, paint the shadows on the wall. If you never name the reason, was there any truth at all? Nothing happened here. You know. You know. You know… But you won’t say.

THE DENIER

You say the rain is falling upward,
you say the fire isn’t warm.
You watch the window slowly breaking,
then swear there never was a storm.

You change the names,
you move the signs,
you leave the truth
three steps behind.

Close your eyes and call it daylight,
turn the evidence around.
Keep on talking through the silence
till you cannot hear the sound.

You saw the smoke across the ceiling,
you smelled the ashes on your coat.
But every time the room gets darker
you find another little note.

Not this.
Not now.
Not me.
Not how.
No. No. No. No…

Close your eyes and call it daylight,
paint the shadows on the wall.
If you never name the reason,
was there any truth at all?

Nothing happened here.

You know.
You know.
You know…
But you won’t say.
