We looked last week at the inconvenience of truth in our lives. We discussed the fact that true love tells the truth even when it might not be well-received. There is tension in truth-telling in relationships, and we discussed this last week.
This week, I explain the environment of the Ephesians and the conditions of the day. Ephesus was a seaport, and it was in a bit of a decline at the time Paul wrote this letter. Paul was under house arrest in Rome when he wrote this letter to the Ephesians.
Ephesus
Ephesus was a thriving place, and we can compare it to many of our cities. Economic prosperity, various cultures, tourism, and other features of Ephesus make it easy to compare to our culture today. They had idols. We have idols. They had cultural tensions. We have similar tensions. Morality was challenged in their culture, and it is certainly under attack in ours.
Paul urges unity among the Ephesians despite these challenges. He does so even knowing the darkness of the cultural sin in Ephesus. The distractions we encounter were present in Ephesus. We can rest in the fact that God is unchanging, and that the challenges we experience and the needs we have were present at Ephesus.
The Culture
The antisemitism in our culture is shocking. We can look at Artimus worship and the need for unity among Jews and Gentiles in Ephesus to find the critical lessons we discuss in this episode. Paul discusses dysfunction in the family. He explains the supremacy of Christ as the solution for the challenges of the day. We can rest in these beautiful truths when we are tempted to fret over the tension and the struggles we experience.
