Now that we have wrapped up the invertebrate chordates, it's time to tackle the third and by the far the largest subphylum of Chordata, Vertebrata. So what is a vertebrate? By contrast, what is an invertebrate? What do these terms mean in the context of phylogeny? Let's make sure this is well understood before examining the vertebrates.
