――― English Summary ChatGPT’s custom GPTs are coming to an end. On personal accounts, it has not been possible to create new ones since this summer, and existing GPTs are scheduled to stop working on December 11, 2026 (February 11, 2027 under some business and school contracts). I’ve started to see people say, “But I finally managed to make one after that seminar.” I’m one of the people who made a lot of GPTs. I started in the spring of 2024: one to summarise text, one to rewrite to a set length, one to proofread, one to count characters, one to write a particular kind of blog post, and one that, given the name of an illness, explains it for care staff — an overview, what to watch for in daily life, and tips for care. One by one, I handed my small daily tasks over to them. But my GPTs had already moved house once before this. At my previous workplace I could use ChatGPT freely for work. When I decided to get my own tools, I chose Google Workspace, which gave me Gemini — so around December 2025 I rebuilt all my GPTs as Gems, Gemini’s version of the same idea. When the place changes, what you made has to move too. That’s what I thought then. This time, I’ve rebuilt them once more, as Claude “skills,” because I’ve come to work mainly in Claude Code. A skill is, in a word, a set of written instructions for how a job is done. The instructions I used to keep inside GPTs and Gems now live as files, in my own hands. That is the biggest difference. Rebuilding them taught me two things. First, as long as you have the instructions, you can rebuild the same thing properly. My proofreading GPT already worked by simply pasting in text: it checked twelve points — typos, inconsistent spellings, how numbers are written, punctuation, consistent sentence endings and more — and returned the fully corrected text. As a skill, it does exactly the same. The place changed, but with the instruction text in hand, I could bring it all along. Second, I can now do more than before. Above all, past exchanges actually count. GPTs and Gems remembered only what happened inside that one chat; open a new chat and I was explaining everything from scratch again. Now I can add what we decided, and the forms I was happy with, to the files and keep them. For example, when I reply to comments on Substack, I add the replies I actually sent to the skill as examples — and from then on, the suggested replies come closer to the way I write. What comes back reflects what came before. I can also hand a single skill more at once. My illness guide still covers the same three things as in the GPT days, but now adds guidance on when to report a change and reference sources checked to actually exist. My morning news roundup drafts the piece, waits for my check, and then produces the read-aloud script, the English translation and the announcement, in a fixed order. A GPT was a single request. A skill has become a whole job — the steps, the checklist and the examples handed over together — and the more I use it, the better it fits me. Looking into all this, I noticed something else. The migration path offered for GPTs is a format called “plugins” — and the instructions written in a GPT are said to become a “skill” inside it. Gems are also reported to be ending, and they too look set to move to “skills” (this comes from information found inside the app; I haven’t yet been able to confirm an official announcement from Google). Different companies, same direction. The skill format has been published as a shared standard, and more and more tools from other companies can read it. Put your work in skill form once, and it becomes much easier to carry with you when the tools change. The place I reached after rebuilding twice turns out to be where everyone is now heading. If GPTs are giving you trouble right now: you don’t have to move everything at once. Choose just one — the one you use most — and save its instruction text and any knowledge files you added. As long as you have those, you can rebuild it anywhere. Please do just that before it stops working on December 11. Two moves have taught me something. What I was making wasn’t a tool. It was the way I do my work — how I summarise, how I proofread, how to explain an illness to people on the care floor. That doesn’t disappear when the place changes. Write it down, and take it with you. GPTs may end, but what you made doesn’t have to. That’s what I believe. This is a public episode.

Claude Code

English Summary

ChatGPT’s custom GPTs are coming to an end. On personal accounts, it has not been possible to create new ones since this summer, and existing GPTs are scheduled to stop working on December 11, 2026 (February 11, 2027 under some business and school contracts). I’ve started to see people say, “But I finally managed to make one after that seminar.”

I’m one of the people who made a lot of GPTs.
