English Summary Last time, I wrote about the end of custom GPTs, telling people who had made their own to save their instructions and knowledge files. But after writing it, something kept nagging at me: what about the people who didn’t make their own? Reading articles, Substack Notes and note, I keep coming across voices like “The GPT I bought is going to stop working” and “But I got it as a course bonus.” In fact, I’ve been on the giving side too. I once gave seminar participants a GPT that, given the name of an illness, explains it for care staff. At a seminar for business owners, I taught how to make a GPT that helps draw up a business plan. And as paid work, I’ve built GPTs together with clients while teaching them. So this isn’t someone else’s problem. Looking into it, there are three things I’d like people who had a GPT made for them, bought one, or were given one to know. First, it will stop working on December 11. Second, if you only use a GPT, you can’t move it yourself — only the person who made it can. Third, even if the maker moves it, it won’t simply keep working for you: the maker has to share it, and you have to add it again. On top of that, you usually can’t see the instructions inside a GPT someone else made, so my earlier advice — save the instructions — isn’t something you can do. So what can you do? First, ask the person who made it, or the place you bought it from: Do you plan to move it? Roughly when? Will you share the new version with me? Will there be an extra charge? Asking isn’t rude. And if it has produced important writing for you, save it somewhere of your own — your past conversations won’t carry over to the new version. One thing to watch out for: you may see more and more offers saying, “GPTs are ending, so switch to this right now,” and some of them may be expensive. There’s no need to decide in a hurry. There is still time before December 11. And I’d like to suggest one thing you could do now: write down what you were having the GPT do for you. What did you put in, and what did you want back? If you can put it in your own words, that already is a set of instructions. Whether you ask someone else next time or try making it yourself, if you understand what’s inside, a change of place won’t leave you stuck. Finally, a word as someone who made them. The GPTs I gave away will stop on December 11 too. The people I built them with made them in their own accounts, so they can move them themselves. But the people I simply gave them to can’t. I believe that whoever made a GPT has a responsibility to move it. For the GPT that explains illnesses, I plan to share the instruction text inside it with the people I gave it to — with that text, they can rebuild it anywhere. Tools change sooner or later. But what you wanted them to do is something you can keep in your own hands — even if someone else made the tool for you. This is a public episode.

English Summary

Last time, I wrote about the end of custom GPTs, telling people who had made their own to save their instructions and knowledge files. But after writing it, something kept nagging at me: what about the people who didn’t make their own?

Reading articles, Substack Notes and note, I keep coming across voices like “The GPT I bought is going to stop working” and “But I got it as a course bonus.”

In fact, I’ve been on the giving side too.
