English Summary The other day, I took my mother for a drive towards the sea. At the first she bought conger-eel rice “for tonight’s dinner,” and at the second, bread and mandarins — and she looked so pleased. Driving home after that, it occurred to me: if the café we’d planned on had been open, we would never have seen that sea. We ended up there because my plan fell through. I do think preparing properly matters. But the days that go exactly as prepared are the ones I tend not to remember. What stays with me is what I stumbled upon after a plan went wrong and I had to scramble. The days when plans fall through are the ones that last. And I suspect it wasn’t only the restaurant that made her happy. It was seeing the sea — and having so much time to talk in the car. Perhaps the time together mattered more than the destination. My mother seems to be growing a little lonelier as she gets older. I’m going to take her out for a drive again. Next time, I think I’ll be able to stay calm even if the place we’re heading for turns out to be closed. This is a public episode.

The other day, I took my mother for a drive towards the sea. The weather wasn’t great, but it was a day we had promised each other. We were heading for a shrine — a place suggested to me by the “Lucky Direction Navigator” of Galaxy Kirin-san, someone I’ve come to know on Substack.

The whole time I was driving, my mother talked — one thing after another, without a pause — while I nodded along with my hands on the wheel. She lives on her own, and she recently turned eighty. I think there are long stretches when she has no one to talk to. Not long before, for her eightieth birthday, my two sisters and I had gathered with our families — grandchildren and great-grandchildren included — and we had all talked a great deal. Even so, with so many people there, perhaps she was the one being considerate. Ordinary, nothing-in-particular chatter may simply have been easier in a car with just the two of us.

The shrine had an atmosphere somehow like the one near my family home, and talking about that, the two of us climbed the steps together. After we had paid our respects, it was time for lunch. There was a café I had decided we would go to. But when we arrived, it was closed, and I hurried to find somewhere else. The place we found was by the sea, and you could see the water from the window. My mother ate her lunch looking out at it and said, happily, “This is a nice change — I’m glad.”

On the way back we also stopped at a seaside market full of fish and shellfish, and at a roadside station selling the handmade bread my mother loves and local fruit. At the first she bought conger-eel rice “for tonight’s dinner,” and at the second, bread and mandarins — and she looked so pleased.

Driving home after that, it occurred to me: if the café we’d planned on had been open, we would never have seen that sea. We ended up there because my plan fell through.
