The Earbud Assistant Problem Nobody Solves
transcript
show notes
We've been promised a seamless voice assistant in our ear for a decade — and the model layer is finally good enough. So why does the thing still not work? This episode digs into the unglamorous plumbing that makes or breaks the wearable assistant: a hardcoded mic constant in Home Assistant's Android app that routes audio to your pocket instead of your earbud, a wake-word spotter that silently eats the first word of your command, and the brutal physics of fitting voice activation into a device with a four-kilobyte instruction cache. We look at Yandex's remarkable 200-kilobyte wake-word engineering, the volume-knob bug that took a month to find, and what Humane's $230M failure tells us about solving the hard problem while shipping a bad experience. The model isn't the bottleneck anymore — and that's a strange place to be.
