Why Does Turning It Off and On Again Actually Work?

“Have you tried turning it off and on again?” It may be the most famous piece of tech advice ever given. It is also surprisingly effective. In this episode of Mr. Fred’s Tech Talks, Mr. Fred takes a fun look at what is actually happening when a computer, router, app, or other piece of technology gets restarted. Why does a reboot clear up frozen programs? What happens to memory? Why can a device suddenly start working again even though nothing was physically repaired? The answer comes down to one important idea: state. Modern computers are juggling countless processes, services, connections, and temporary pieces of information at the same time. Occasionally, something gets stuck, confused, or out of sync. Restarting gives the system a chance to stop, clear temporary conditions, reload what it needs, and return to a known starting point.
