Episode 698: Ryan Montgomery: From a 28-Hour 100-Miler to the Western States Podium

I’m so excited to share this conversation with Ryan Montgomery, who placed third at Western States this year in a huge breakthrough race. The top three men all broke Jim Walmsley’s previous course record, with Ryan running 13:53. This was his fourth consecutive year running Western States after placing seventh twice, and to say this was a breakthrough is a bit of an understatement. Being in the top 10 at Western States is a huge deal, but being on the podium is an even bigger deal. We talk about Ryan’s history with running, how he fell in love with long distances, and the journey it took to get to this level. A lot of people might not know that his first 100-mile race took him 28 hours. The process he’s walked through to achieve these really high-level goals is fascinating. He is truly dedicated to the craft. We also get into the backstory of Ryan’s life and so much more. He set the FKT on the Wonderland Trail in 2020, placed second at the Javelina 100 in 2021, and recently earned his MBA from Dartmouth. I don’t always get off an interview feeling like I really know a person, and I really felt like I knew Ryan at the end of this conversation. I loved this one so much. Ryan is also the founder of Out Trails and shares more about that in this conversation. We’ll link all of the resources we talk about in the show notes. Rachael Rudel is having one of the biggest breakthrough seasons in American distance running. After years away from elite racing, she’s back in a big way. This spring she became the top American woman at both the Boulder Boulder and the B.A.A. 10K, finished second overall at the B.A.A. 10K in a personal best 31:31, placed runner-up at the USATF 4 Mile Championships, and broke the course record at the Horsetooth Half Marathon. Rachael shares the story behind her journey, from battling an eating disorder that stemmed from an undiagnosed case of celiac disease, to making the difficult decision to undergo a preventative double mastectomy after testing positive for the BRCA gene mutation. She talks openly about rebuilding her relationship with running, returning to competition after nearly a decade away from the elite level, and why she believes she’s still only scratching the surface of her potential. Episode 693: Female Founder Series: Dimity McDowell on Leaving Running Behind and Finding The 27th Mile

Today we’re continuing the Female Founder Series with author, podcaster, and co-founder of Another Mother Runner, Dimity McDowell. Dimity was one of the first people I really knew in the running space over a decade ago when I started dipping my toes into podcasting and becoming part of the broader running community beyond my hometown of Indianapolis. Alongside her co-founder, Sarah Bowen Shea, she helped create a movement with Another Mother Runner by providing support, encouragement, and connection to women around the country and around the world. That community continues today, and Another Mother Runner has recently found a new home with Feisty Media. As Dimity entered a new season in her own athletic journey, she wrote a beautiful book called The 27th Mile: How to Smooth the Rough Transition Out of the Running Years. She’s a former contributing editor at Runner’s World, and through this book she’s supporting anyone whose relationship with running is beginning to change. As I’ve navigated my own injury and foot surgery, this book helped me feel a little less alone. Watching other people accomplish incredible things while wondering what my own future in running might look like has been emotional, and I think learning to accept change is an important part of the process. In The 27th Mile, Dimity reckons with her decision to stop running, grieves leaving behind a sport she deeply loved, and shares how she rediscovered purpose, connection, and those endorphins on the other side. I love Dimity’s heart and everything she’s done for women in the running community over the years. And I’ll tell you what, interviewing another podcaster is always fun because they know how to have a great conversation. If you’re in any kind of transition with your own running journey, I highly recommend checking out The 27th Mile. Episode 692: Canyon Woodward; Advocacy, Golden Tickets and Western States Bound!

Western States is here, and I couldn’t think of a better guest to have on the podcast than Canyon Woodward. Canyon has quietly become one of the most exciting athletes in trail running. He became the first ultrarunner to earn three consecutive top-five finishes at Western States Golden Ticket races in a single season, finishing third at the 2025 Javelina 100, fourth at the 2026 Black Canyon 100K, and fifth at the 2026 Canyons 100K. His progression at UTMB has been just as impressive, climbing from 48th place in 2022 to 13th place in 2025. But Canyon’s story goes far beyond racing. He grew up in the mountains of western North Carolina, was homeschooled, spent part of his childhood in the remote community of Stehekin, Washington, and now balances elite ultrarunning with environmental advocacy and political organizing. He also co-authored the book Dirt Road Revival. This was such a thoughtful conversation. We talk about growing up immersed in the outdoors, his journey into elite trail running, preparing for his Western States debut, and why he believes “stacking bricks” applies just as much to life and community as it does to training. A big thank you to Mount to Coast for connecting me with Canyon. He’s sponsored by Mount to Coast and will be racing Western States in one of their trail shoes this weekend. If you’re enjoying the podcast, I’d love for you to leave a rating and review. It helps more people discover the show. Thanks for being here, and enjoy my conversation with Canyon Woodward. What we talked about: Growing up in western North Carolina and Stehekin, Washington How homeschooling and outdoor adventures shaped his life Balancing environmental advocacy, politics, and professional running His progression from first ultramarathons to Western States contender Preparing for his Western States debut and race strategy UTMB progression and lessons learned over four years Pacers, Golden Tickets, and the future of elite trail racing Finding purpose through running, community, and public lands advocacy Media mentioned: Books Dirt Road Revival Landmarks HUUG makes high-quality bras and underwear designed to actually fit and support your body through every phase of life. She’s an ultrarunner, coach, teacher, and one of the most accomplished endurance athletes in the sport. In 2025, she ran 603 miles, surpassing 600 miles in six days and setting a world record pending ratification. She also finished second at Badwater 135 and continues to push the boundaries of what’s possible in ultrarunning. One of the most fascinating parts of Meg’s story is that she didn’t discover running until she was 29 years old. What started with a goal of breaking two hours in her first half marathon quickly grew into a passion for ultras, trail running, and eventually some of the longest races in the world. In this conversation, Meg shares how she approaches races as long as Cocodona, why she focuses on competing against herself rather than other runners, how she balances teaching sixth-grade math with elite ultrarunning, and what she’s learned from spending days at a time moving through mountains, deserts, and remote wilderness. We also talk about sleep strategy, hallucinations, training for six-day races, the value of recovery, and why she continues to pursue goals that have a real chance of failure. Thank you to Mount to Coast for supporting this episode. Their new C1 Super Trainer is designed for long miles, everyday training, and durability that goes the distance. Courtney Frerichs returns to the podcast for a conversation that goes far beyond racing. Courtney opens up about the difficult road back from major ankle and ACL surgeries, missing the 2024 Olympic Trials, and what it’s looked like to rebuild both physically and mentally over the past two years. She shares how stepping into a completely new chapter of her career has changed the way she approaches training, racing, and confidence. We also go all the way back to Courtney’s early days growing up in Missouri, playing multiple sports, doing gymnastics at a high level, and discovering running later than most elite athletes. In this conversation, Sara reflects on her career arc, from being the first professional athlete to say yes to this podcast back in 2016 to becoming a veteran of the sport who continues to push her limits. Episode 682: Live in Indianapolis: Emma Grace Hurley, Drew Hunter, Courtney Frerichs + A Surprise Drop-In from Jenny Simpson

I’m coming to you with a bonus episode recorded live in Indianapolis during an incredible weekend at the 500 Festival Indy Mini Marathon and the USATF 5K Championships. I had the opportunity to announce the 5K and witness a high-stakes race where the top two finishers were competing for a spot on the world championship team, which made the energy in the city so special. The day before the race, I hosted a live podcast at the beautiful Bottleworks Hotel alongside my friend Ally Brettnacher from Finish Lines and Milestones. These Indy weekends have become such a fun tradition for us, bringing the running community together in a meaningful way. We were joined by an amazing panel: Emma Grace Hurley, Drew Hunter, and Courtney Frerichs. Emma Grace is in the middle of a breakout season, recently breaking an American record and continuing to stack impressive performances. Drew just won the USATF 5K Championship race that weekend and shared insights from his journey as both a professional athlete and a dad. Courtney, an Olympic and world silver medalist, opened up about her return to racing after navigating major injuries and surgeries over the past couple of years. And in true live-event fashion, we had a surprise moment when Jenny Simpson jumped on the mic for a quick cameo, which made the night even more special. This event came together with the help of some incredible local partners, and the atmosphere was just so much fun. We had great food, a shoe decorating station, and a packed room of people who love this sport. Quick note on the audio: since this was recorded live with wireless mics, it may not be as crisp as a typical episode, but the conversation and energy more than make up for it. If you enjoy this episode, I’d love for you to leave a rating and review, and if you’re ever in Indy for these race weekends in May or November, come join us live.
