show notes
I've spent years studying psychology, teaching meditation, and working in professional sports, and somehow one of the most useful things I can recommend is going for a walk.
I realize how disappointing that sounds.
But there's something weird what happens when you stop sitting in the same room, thinking the same thoughts, and actually move through the world for a while.
In this episode, I want to talk about walking as a spiritual practice. We get into why movement can change the way we experience anger, anxiety, grief, and overthinking, how walking affects the nervous system, and why human beings have been wandering around trying to figure themselves out for thousands of years.
I also talk about walking in Abrahamic traditions, pilgrimage, Buddhist walking meditation, creativity, fatherhood, and why some of the best conversations happen when you're simply moving alongside somebody.
And because I apparently have no sense of business, I also explain why you should occasionally turn off podcasts (including mine) and go walking without anything playing in your ears.
You don't need ten thousand steps, a fitness tracker, a special breathing technique, or a spiritual breakthrough. Sometimes it's worth going outside simply because you've spent six hours staring at a screen and your body would probably appreciate remembering that the rest of the planet exists.
If you've been feeling stuck in your head lately, this one's for you.
Go for a walk.
