How to Protect Assets and Still Use Medicaid Benefits

I have always wanted to know more about how to protect assets and still be able to qualify for Medicaid benefits, in this episode, I realize it is possible for all of us! Sayge Grubbs is an Elder Law attorney that is on a mission to improve the lives of our elderly population. Not only does he help protect assets and qualify clients for Medicaid benefits, he has also created Seniorsindex.com for Alabama residents to access necessary information quickly. I am so honored to be able to interview a lawyer and gain so much knowledge and insight to share with everyone who asks. Main take-a-ways: 1. Prepare early 2. There is a trust available that will protect assets from Medicaid. Sage Legacy Counsel is a firm that specializes in this type of trust. 3. Not all trusts are created equal. Know what kind of trust you want. 4. The cost for a trust should be $1500+. If you are ever around people who are claiming they can create a trust for you for less than $1000 be very critical about their legitimacy. 5.Having a trust will avoid probate. That means peace for your family after your passing. The event Sayge Grubbs is hosting is the 3rd Annual Successful Aging Bootcamp in Montgomery, Alabama. The event will be held at Vaughn Forest Church May 19, 2023 and starts at 10am and ends at 3pm.. This event will have CEU's for social workers and nurses. All proceeds will be donated to a local charity delivering meals on wheels. You can go to seniorsindex.com to register for the event. Tips for a Loved One in the Hospital

Do you have a loved one in the hospital? Have you had a loved one in the hospital that the experience was not as good as could have been? I have put together a few tips that I have found helpful over the last few years of my career inside the senior living industry. Here are a few topics we cover: 1. Know when the doctor rounds 2. Get to know your nurses and communicate your loved ones needs and how to best care for them. Make it personal. 3. Understand that not all nurses are trained to care for people with dementia. 4. Communicate with your case managers and social workers early one and explain current living situations and plans for the future if a move is required for their safety needs. If you would like to reach me to help you with your caregiving journey then you can schedule a call with me and we can talk about your loved one and how to ensure you know everything you need to know! The Physical Connection Episode

You and I know that every person has a desire for a physical connection. This desire does not go away as we age for some if not a lot of people. When someone pays attention to another person, especially when it is unexpected, life changes and it can get exciting again. Living in an assisted living community opens the door to new friendships and possibilities that do not exist if your loved one is living alone. There is also a downside to this need of connection that needs to be understood. The internet can trap people and manipulate those that are niave and lonely. This episode dives into funny situations I found myself in trying to navigate my resident's need for ( a mature and professional way of putting it ) physical connection! I have created the Aspire for More with Erin company to be a resource for families needing guidance, inspiration or a hand to hold. I can help jumpstart any conversation with any family member regarding the next step and help determine what that next step should be. I have helped 1000's of families navigate the caregiving journey and it has been the joy of my life! Wisdom in the Gray Area

Most of the time in life when we reflect, we see that we could have changed our reaction or our approach in the gray area of the situation. This concept is no different in caregiving. When our loved one struggles with fitting in with social norms how we approach the situation is important. When our loved one is exhibiting behaviors that can lead to frustration, how we approach the situation is important. You have choices and I explain the reasoning behind your options and give you examples of the good and the bad. The Episode about Fear, Rejection and Acceptance

I am the most vulnerable I have been regarding my personal and professional journey in the caregiving space. In this episode we discuss the choices we make when we allow fear to keep us stuck in patterns that do not serve us and what happens when we move forward anyway. When we learn to accept the things we cannot control and accept embracing the unknown true peace can follow. I dive into my own journey with letting go of my own definitions of failure and reframing the idea of failure to "most Improved". Most improved allows us to keep moving forward and learning from our mistakes. Once you give yourself grace to make mistakes, learn and implement you are on the path to success. Set aside some time for you to learn from me, how to slowly start redefining failure to serve you and your loved ones better. How to Make the Tough Decisions

Have you ever wanted some free proactive advice? Are you in the thick of the hard times caring for your elderly loved one or a loved one that may not be elderly. In this episode I am giving you real life examples of decisions I have helped families navigate and help you navigate your tough decisions too. It is important to find your support system and I encourage you to protect your peace by allowing healthy contributors in to the conversation that can bring in perspective and life experiences that you may not have had to experience yet. But I also encourage you to keep the unhealthy contributors out of the conversation so you can reduce the amount of stress you have to wade through in emotionally difficult times. When you are forced to make the hard decisions regarding someone else's healthcare do what it takes to find clarity and only focus one step at a time to avoid anxiety and panic. Focusing on the controllables and taking all decisions one at a time will allow you peace of mind. You can connect with me at www.aspireformorewitherin.com You can join my email list here. Things I have learned focusing on Life in Reverse

Today's podcast episode dives into my reality of focusing on life in reverse. I never knew how impacted my life was by focusing on life in reverse. In many ways I consider living life in reverse a great blessing, but it can be strange when my point of view is not the mainstream of my peers. But uniqueness and authenticity is a badge of honor and certainly a way to stand out! (so I tell myself) Some of the biggest lessons I learned are: 1. Financial, you don't have to have made a lot of money to be able to afford Assisted Living. You just have to have lived below your means 2.How we raise our children or how much we loved them doesn't mean they will be excellent caregivers, because not everyone has the skill of caregiving. 3. Boys can be excellent caregivers of their elderly parents, despite what popular opinion is. 4.How you treat your children's spouses is important. 5.The need for connection never goes away 6. Bingo is popular because it is a way for expression of the competitive nature. 7. All insurance is not created equal and should be studied through the lens of pay now or pay later. This includes long term care insurance and Medicare insurance. The link for the Facebook group page is below. The Power of Patterns

This episode dives into the power of patterns. The patterns we pay attention too can help us define the path we want to take for our lives. The power of patterns can also help us identify the areas we need to change in our life in order to achieve the goals we want to achieve, As a caregiver, the patterns we identify can guide us to a better transition of care for our loved ones, identify struggles in our loved ones that are new or we see them differently and through identifying the patterns we can get the care our loved one needs. The power of patterns can change the direction in our lives that will allow us peace and the clarity we desire if we: 1. Identify the pattern 2. Us the patterns to our/our loved ones best interest 3. Create patterns that propel us to where we want to be There is a Facebook Group to support this podcast that allows direct access for questions, feedback and suggestions for future podcasts.
