When The Old Story Breaks
transcript
show notes
The moment you realise you’ve been living for an audience can be both brutal and freeing.
I sit down with Aaron Quinn, founder of Laughing Heart, to talk about the point where the story you tell about your life stops fitting and what it really takes to write a truer one. We go back to his early solo travel, the shock of feeling “uninteresting”, and the later lightning strike of recognising he could resign from a career that looked good on paper but did not feel like his life.
From there, we get practical about life transitions. We unpack why so many of us “jump off the cliff” and immediately grab a branch, clinging to a safer identity because the unknown feels unbearable. Aaron shares the messy middle: self-doubt, the inner critic, and the strange grief of ending a past life, plus the difference between a surface-level change and a genuine internal transition where something new can emerge.
We also explore the practices that make surrender possible: mindfulness, learning to listen to the body, and returning to curiosity and wonder instead of judgement. Aaron breaks down the pillars behind Laughing Heart and the Odyssey retreat work in Greece, using The Odyssey as a powerful metaphor for coming home to essence. We finish with a bigger question about society, imagination, and the belief that “that’s just the way it is”, and what becomes possible when we refuse that story.
If this conversation resonates, subscribe so you do not miss what’s next, share it with someone in a season of change, and leave a review to help more people find the path back to enoughness.
