In 1887, a farmer discovered a stone supposedly containing the final words of a prospector who vanished into the Black Hills more than fifty years earlier. Since then, the canyon has erased an entire mining town, destroyed a railroad, hidden missing hikers from search teams... and, for nearly ninety years, even lost a waterfall. Add sacred Lakota traditions, unsolved murders, modern Missing 411 mythology, and a landscape almost perfectly designed to make people disappear, and it's easy to understand why generations have believed something is wrong inside this gorge.
