Send us Fan Mail 2026: A Record-Breaking Summer, and It’s Only Halfway Done Let’s start with the raw numbers, because they’re genuinely eye-popping. By 29 July 2026, satellite data showed that around 91,000 hectares had burned in France so far in 2026 — smashing the country’s previous full-season record of just over 66,000 hectares, and remember, the fire season doesn’t even wrap up until the end of October. Spain’s numbers are even more dramatic: over 200,000 hectares burned, and a single fire near Madrid became the largest in the country’s entire recorded history, at one point nearly destroying a NASA facility used to communicate with deep-space spacecraft. Things got intense enough in France that firefighters found themselves battling something called a “fire cloud” — a genuinely wild phenomenon where a fire burns so hot and so violently that it generates its own weather system, complete with lightning and erratic wind patterns. This was the first time one had ever been recorded in the country. If that sounds like something from a disaster movie, that’s because it basically is one, except it’s real and it’s happening right now. The scale of it all led government ministers from Spain and the UK to jointly declare that the summer’s wildfires showed climate change has become a genuine national security concern for the whole of Europe.
