It might sound like something out of a superhero movie, but these forests really exist. They are called mangrove forests, and after decades of destruction, they are making an incredible comeback. A Forest in Trouble For much of the last century, mangrove forests were disappearing at an alarming rate. Across tropical coastlines, these unique forests were cleared to make way for fish farms, agriculture, housing developments, and growing cities. Scientists became increasingly worried that mangroves could continue shrinking until very little remained. Between the 1980s and 2010, more than 12,000 square kilometres of mangrove forest were destroyed across Asia, Africa, and the Americas—an area roughly the size of Jamaica. The loss of these forests was not just bad news for wildlife. Coastal communities also lost an important natural defence against storms and flooding. What Makes Mangroves So Special? Mangroves are trees and shrubs that grow where land meets the sea. Their twisted roots rise above muddy coastal waters, creating one of the most distinctive ecosystems on Earth. Although rainforests often receive more attention, mangroves play an equally important role in protecting the environment. These remarkable forests: Absorb and store huge amounts of carbon dioxide, helping to slow climate change. Protect coastlines from erosion, storm surges, and tsunamis. Provide safe nursery habitats for fish, crabs, and other marine species. Support the livelihoods of millions of people who depend on fishing and coastal resources. In fact, scientists estimate that mangroves can store up to five times more carbon than many land-based forests, making them powerful allies in the fight against global warming. The Good News: Mangroves Are Recovering In a surprising turn of events, scientists have discovered that mangrove forests are recovering faster than expected. Since 2010, the world has gained more mangrove forest area than it has lost. This is an encouraging example of how ecosystems can recover when given the chance. One reason for this recovery is that mangroves are naturally resilient. When people stop cutting them down and damaging their habitats, many mangrove forests can regenerate on their own.
