67. The Skylight Heist

This week on Framed, we head to Montreal in 1972 for one of Canada’s biggest art crimes: the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts skylight heist. In the middle of a chaotic weekend of headlines, three thieves climbed onto the museum roof, slipped in through a skylight under repair, tied up the guards, and made off with millions in paintings and artefacts, including a rare Rembrandt. The strangest part of the story comes after the heist, when the museum director began receiving anonymous phone calls. We get into the theft itself, the bizarre negotiation attempts, the artworks that vanished, and why phone booths are creepy.
