When we hear the word manipulation, we tend to imagine some obviously dishonest person sitting across from us with an evil plan. But manipulation usually does not look like that. In fact, the most effective manipulation often looks completely normal. It can sound like a reasonable request. It can come wrapped in concern. It can appeal to our emotions. It can make us feel guilty, afraid, angry, obligated, or even flattered. And that is exactly why self-discipline matters.
