The Second Commission

Among the records of the Patent Rolls for the reign of Richard III there survives a commission dated 8 March 1485 at Westminster, appointing Oto Gilbert, Thomas Boweryng, Robert Holbeme, Richard Taillour of Toppesham, yeoman of the crown, and Richard Lepton, yeoman of the king's chamber, to examine the complaint of Giliom Marcellis, a subject of the Duke of Austria, concerning the seizure of his ship by one John Taillour. The entry notes that an earlier commission to Gilbert and Boweryng alone had produced no result, recording only that they "have not done so." The expanded commission was given until the fifth day of May to certify its findings. No findings were ever certified. No report from either commission survives in the record. The account that follows is imagined. The silence is not.
