Cracking Codes

Ever wondered how people managed to send secret messages before the days of encrypted apps and passwords? Thought cracking codes was something only spies and mathematicians could do? Or wondered how you’d get on if someone handed you a message you weren’t supposed to understand? Then this episode is for you! In this episode, Theo and his mum dive into the fascinating world of codes and ciphers. They explore the simple but clever Caesar cipher, before moving on to the much more complicated Enigma machine — the famous code-breaking system used during the Second World War. Along the way, they look at how codes actually work, why some are surprisingly easy to crack, and what makes others so much harder to break. As usual, Theo gets stuck into the maths and logic behind the ideas, while Mum asks the questions — and occasionally gets rather suspicious about just how much Theo seems to know about secret messages! A curious look at the history, mathematics and logic behind cracking codes — and a reminder that sometimes the best way to understand a secret is to work out how it was hidden in the first place.
