Whom Shall I Fear? | Trusting God When Fear Is Real
What does Psalm 27 teach us about overcoming fear and trusting God when the danger we face is real? David faced genuine enemies and uncertainty, yet he could still declare, “The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear?”
Fear is not always irrational. Sometimes the diagnosis really is uncertain. The financial pressure is real. The situation really is dangerous. Faith does not require Christians to pretend that frightening circumstances do not exist.
Psalm 27 shows us how to face them differently.
In this episode of Digging Another Well, we explore Psalm 27:1 and what the Bible teaches about trusting God in times of fear, uncertainty, and genuine danger. David was surrounded by enemies, but instead of beginning with the size of his problem, he began with the character of his God.
“The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the LORD is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?” — Psalm 27:1 KJV
Through a personal story from my years as a paramedic, we also consider the important difference between recognizing a legitimate threat and allowing fear to take control of our lives.
God does not always remove the danger before we have to walk through it. He does not promise that Christians will never experience frightening circumstances, difficult seasons, health concerns, financial uncertainty, or an unknown future.
Instead, Psalm 27 gives us something greater than the absence of trouble.
When the LORD is our light, darkness cannot leave us without direction.
When the LORD is our salvation, the circumstances threatening us do not have the final word.
When the LORD is the strength of our life, our own weakness does not determine what we can endure.
If you are struggling with fear, facing uncertainty, or trying to trust God through circumstances you cannot control, Psalm 27 offers powerful biblical encouragement. Christian faith is not about denying reality. It is about viewing reality in light of who God is.
David could look directly at the enemies surrounding him and ask, “Whom shall I fear?”
Not because there was nothing to fear.
Because nothing he feared was greater than his God.
