When the Army Won’t Move | Overcoming Fear That Keeps You Stuck

Can fear keep you from following where God is leading? In First Samuel 17, Israel had soldiers, weapons, armor, and experience—but when they saw Goliath, fear stopped an entire army from moving. Sometimes the greatest victory fear wins is convincing us never to take the first step.

“When Saul and all Israel heard those words of the Philistine, they were dismayed, and greatly afraid.” — First Samuel 17:11 KJV

For forty days, Goliath walked into the valley of Elah and challenged Israel.

Morning and evening, the giant appeared.

And morning and evening, Israel remained exactly where they were.

In this episode of Digging Another Well, we continue our David and Goliath Bible study through First Samuel 17 and examine how fear can create spiritual paralysis. Through Israel’s response to Goliath and personal stories involving the beginning of Another Well Ministries and the adoption of my son from China, we explore what happens when God is calling us forward but fear is telling us to stay where we are.

Israel’s soldiers were not incapable of fighting. They were trained men who had fought battles before. But Goliath created a different kind of fear—not simply the fear of losing, but the fear of trying.

That is one of fear’s most effective weapons.

The giant does not always have to defeat you in battle. Sometimes it only has to appear intimidating enough to convince you that taking the next step is pointless.

And the longer Israel stood still, the greater Goliath seemed.

Goliath had not grown stronger during those forty days. Israel’s fear had.

The same thing can happen in our lives. Fear of failure can keep us from pursuing what God has placed before us. Fear of uncertainty can keep us from taking a step of faith. Fear of change can convince us that staying somewhere familiar is safer than following God somewhere unknown.

But staying still is not always neutral.

There are ministries that never begin, relationships never pursued, opportunities never embraced, conversations never started, and acts of obedience never attempted because fear convinced someone not to move.

What has fear been keeping you from doing?

What step of faith have you delayed because the giant standing in front of you looks too large?

And what has remaining still already cost you?

If you are struggling with fear, feeling stuck, or trying to find the courage to follow God into an uncertain future, First Samuel 17 reminds us that faith does not require seeing the entire path before we move.

Sometimes faith simply means taking the next step.

The valley is still open. The giant is still there.

But the God calling you forward has not changed.

Don’t allow fear to win without ever fighting the battle.

It is time to move.
