The Shepherd Boy Nobody Expected | When God Calls the Unqualified
Have you ever felt unqualified for what God is calling you to do? In First Samuel 17, Saul looked at David and saw everything David lacked. He was young, inexperienced, and had no record as a warrior. But Saul’s assessment overlooked the one qualification that mattered most: God had already chosen David.
“And Saul said to David, Thou art not able to go against this Philistine to fight with him: for thou art but a youth, and he a man of war from his youth.” — First Samuel 17:33 KJV
“Thou art not able.”
By every visible human measure, Saul’s conclusion made sense.
David had no military record. He had no armor of his own. He had no formal combat experience. He was the youngest of eight brothers and had been tending sheep while his older brothers stood on the battlefield looking like soldiers.
David was the last person anyone would have chosen.
And yet he was the one God had already chosen.
In this episode of Digging Another Well, we continue our David and Goliath Bible study through First Samuel 17 and explore what Scripture teaches about feeling unqualified, overcoming self-doubt, and trusting God when He calls us to something bigger than our abilities.
This pattern appears throughout the Bible. God repeatedly works through people the world would overlook. Moses struggled with his speech. Rahab had a past no one would have put on a spiritual résumé. Mary came from an unremarkable place. Jesus called ordinary fishermen to carry the gospel.
God has never been limited by the world’s assessment of who is qualified.
The voices telling us we are not ready, capable, experienced, or enough can become some of the loudest voices we hear. And those voices do not always come from people trying to hurt us. Saul wasn’t necessarily trying to destroy David’s confidence. He was applying reasonable human logic to what appeared to be an unreasonable situation.
But God-sized assignments cannot always be evaluated by human qualifications.
David did not respond by trying to convince Saul how impressive he was. Instead, he remembered the lion and the bear. His confidence wasn’t rooted in his own résumé. It was rooted in the faithfulness of the God who had delivered him before.
Maybe you feel overlooked.
Maybe someone has told you that you’re not qualified.
Maybe you’re looking at what God has placed before you and wondering whether you have enough experience, ability, resources, or strength to do it.
Remember David.
God is not limited by what appears on your résumé. He is looking for a heart willing to trust Him more than the odds.
Sometimes the qualification God is most interested in is simply the willingness to step into the valley.
