The Quiet War Against Contentment

The Quiet War Against Contentment Why Contentment Is One of the Most Countercultural Things a Believer Can Cultivate “Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.” — Hebrews 13:5 We live in a world that is remarkably good at convincing us that what we have is not enough. Every advertisement, carefully curated image, and endless scroll can quietly plant the same thought: Your life would be better if you just had something more. A better house. A newer car. More success. More recognition. A different season of life. Discontentment is not always accidental. Sometimes it is being cultivated around us. In this episode of Digging Another Well, we look at Hebrews 13:5 and the surprisingly countercultural call to contentment. Contentment does not mean abandoning ambition, refusing to grow, or pretending everything in life is perfect. Biblical contentment is something deeper: the settled peace of being grateful for what God has already provided while trusting Him with what is still ahead. And Hebrews gives us the foundation for that kind of life. God does not merely tell us to be content and leave us to manufacture the feeling ourselves. He immediately gives us a promise: “I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.” Our contentment is not ultimately rooted in the sufficiency of our possessions or circumstances. It is rooted in the sufficiency of His presence. In this devotional, we consider how comparison and manufactured desire quietly erode contentment, why wanting to grow is not the same as being discontent, and how remembering what we already have in Christ changes the way we see what we do not have. The world constantly gives us reasons to believe we need more. God gives us something better. He gives us Himself. And that has always been enough. The Quiet War Against Contentment

Why Contentment Is One of the Most Countercultural Things a Believer Can Cultivate

“Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.” — Hebrews 13:5

We live in a world that is remarkably good at convincing us that what we have is not enough.

He immediately gives us a promise:

“I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.”

Our contentment is not ultimately rooted in the sufficiency of our possessions or circumstances.
