The Name You Run Toward With | Facing Your Giants in the Name of the LORD
How do you find courage to face something that has kept you afraid? In First Samuel 17, David did more than stand up to Goliath. He declared where his confidence came from—and then he ran toward the giant.
“Then said David to the Philistine, Thou comest to me with a sword, and with a spear, and with a shield: but I come to thee in the name of the LORD of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom thou hast defied.” — First Samuel 17:45 KJV
Goliath had a sword.
He had a spear.
He had a shield.
David came with something greater: the name of the LORD of hosts.
In this episode of Digging Another Well, we continue our David and Goliath Bible study through First Samuel 17 and explore what it means to move from fear to faith, trust God in overwhelming circumstances, and stop cautiously approaching something God is calling us to face.
Through a personal reflection from my years as a paramedic, we consider what it means to move toward chaos rather than away from it. There were scenes where fear, confusion, and uncertainty were everywhere, but the job required moving toward the problem—and prayer became part of preparing to enter it.
David did something similar in the valley of Elah.
He didn’t negotiate with Goliath. He didn’t explain why he thought he might have a chance. He declared the name in which he came.
Then he ran.
That movement matters.
David’s running was faith made visible. It demonstrated that his words about the LORD were not merely religious language. David genuinely believed that the God who went with him was greater than the giant standing before him.
Many of us face our giants differently.
We stand at a distance. We wait for circumstances to improve. We cautiously move toward what frightens us while secretly hoping we never have to confront it.
David shows us another response.
The giant didn’t become smaller when David started running. The weapons didn’t disappear. The circumstances didn’t suddenly become safer.
What changed was David’s understanding of who was going with him.
If God is calling you to confront something you have been cautiously approaching, perhaps the next step isn’t another day of standing at a distance.
Speak the name of the LORD.
Trust the God who goes with you.
And move.
